Maya Davis Who says tenors have to be men?
How I started singing
At the girls' grammar school where I studied we all sang ghastly things like 'Nymphs & Shepherds,' but one year we actually did Gluck's 'Orpheus'. We kept being last in the competition for the local school choirs, and the singing teacher kept telling me off for wanting to sing an octave below the altos. Then I went to University, and our choir conductor was an amazing man who sang everything from soprano to bass. We had only one tenor, so he asked 'Can any alto sing this?' and played a low D. That was it - and I had many happy years of confusing people. I didn't meet another female tenor till the 1990's.
Why I love it

It's much more immediate than playing an instrument. Singing in the chorus of a musical or light opera is great fun too - acting without the fear of drying. Singing in a choir is a good way to relax and meet people. In my case, that's how I met my husband. He's a tenor too.
